Music

@ Wanamaker’s

I’ve played piano since I was a kid; originally classical, but more recently pop and jazz. For a period of time in my teens, I was playing the pipe organ. The picture above was taken when I was 19 (sans beard) at Wanamaker’s in Philly. I stayed with my friend Dennis James who took me around to see the pipe organs in New York and Philly. The Grand Court of the store had the largest functioning pipe organ in the world (~500 ranks). I played the noon store recital that day. The organ fell into disrepair after Wanamaker’s closed, but I understand that over the past several years it has been fully restored, and they are once again using it for recitals.

I’ve sat at the piano sporadically for most of my life, but more recently have gotten back into practicing and playing. For a long time I owned my grandmother’s August Forster grand piano, but a few years ago while downsizing traded it for a Casio GP-500 digital piano. I also own a few bass guitars that I occasionally play; they sound nice, but the piano is a more complex and satisfying instrument.

Here are some of my experiments with various styles:

Pomp & Circumstances

Danny Boy

The Pink Panther

Fly me to the moon
